Most Christmas window stickers look best and last longer when applied on the inside of the window, facing outward. Indoor placement protects the design from wind, rain, snow, road salt, and temperature swings that can cause lifting edges, fading, or peeling. It also makes cleanup easier at the end of the season.
You want the decoration to stay crisp through the season, especially in cold or wet climates. Many holiday window clings and static decals are designed to adhere smoothly to clean glass indoors and be removed without residue. If your sticker is printed “view from outside,” inside placement will display the artwork correctly to people outdoors.
You need the design to be visible from inside the room (for example, a scene meant to face inward), or the product specifically states “outdoor-rated” or “weatherproof.” Outdoor placement can work, but it requires a decal made for exterior use and a very clean, dry surface to reduce edge lift.
Start with a spotless window: wipe with glass cleaner or a mix of mild soap and water, then dry with a lint-free cloth. For static clings, a light mist of water on the glass can help you reposition the design before pressing it flat. Smooth from the center outward with a soft card or squeegee, and avoid placing stickers over textured glass, dusty screens, or loose paint around the frame.
Some decals are printed to look good from both sides, while others have a “front” and “back.” Check the packaging: if the adhesive is on the printed side, it’s typically meant to go on the inside of the window so the image faces outward through the glass.
