Which Nail Polishes Are TPO-Free? What to Check

What nail polish does not have TPO in it?

If you want to avoid TPO, traditional air-dry nail polish is a practical place to start. TPO is a photoinitiator used in some products that cure under a UV or LED lamp. Regular lacquer dries without a lamp, so it generally does not need that type of ingredient. Formulas vary, though, so the ingredient list is what confirms whether a particular bottle is TPO-free.

How to choose a TPO-free polish

Look for “Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide” on the ingredient label. If it appears, the product contains TPO. A “TPO-free” claim can help narrow your choices, but we recommend reading the full ingredient list as well, especially if you are buying a separate base coat, color, and top coat. Each product in your manicure needs to meet your preference.

You do not have to give up gel polish to avoid TPO. Some UV/LED gel formulas are made without it and use other photoinitiators instead. Choose a gel that explicitly identifies itself as TPO-free, then use the curing lamp and timing specified for that formula. An under-cured gel can leave uncured product on your nails or skin, so keep gel off your cuticles and clean up any contact before curing.

Dip powder systems and long-wear “gel effect” lacquers are other options to consider, but their ingredients depend on the individual system. “Gel effect” usually describes a look or finish, not a UV-cured formula. If avoiding TPO is your priority, focus on the ingredients and curing instructions rather than the name on the bottle.

What about glitter gel polish?

Glitter, color, and shine do not tell you whether a polish contains TPO. If you are considering a dark glitter manicure, our guide to Black Diamond glitter gel polish and long-wear UV/LED manicures can help you understand the application and wear process. Before choosing any gel, confirm the formula’s TPO status and make sure its base coat and top coat also fit your needs.

For the simplest lamp-free route, choose a conventional air-dry lacquer with an ingredient list you can review. For a cured, long-wear finish, choose a clearly labeled TPO-free gel system and follow its directions from prep through removal.

FAQ

Is TPO-free gel polish the same as regular nail polish?

No. TPO-free gel polish still cures under a compatible UV or LED lamp, while regular nail polish air-dries. “TPO-free” describes the gel’s ingredients, not a change in how it cures.
