Most of the time, nothing bad happens: your phone will only take the amount of power it’s designed to accept, and the charger will “downshift” to a slower mode. Modern USB charging is a negotiation between the charger and your phone, so a higher-watt fast charger doesn’t automatically force extra power into your device.
If your phone doesn’t support fast-charging standards (like USB Power Delivery or Quick Charge), it will typically charge at a basic profile (often 5V). That means a 65W charger can perform like a standard charger when paired with an older or more basic phone—safe, just not dramatically quicker.
If your phone supports the same fast-charge protocol as the charger and your cable can handle it, you may see a real speed increase. USB-C Power Delivery devices can request higher voltage/current profiles, and GaN fast chargers often support multiple profiles so newer phones can charge efficiently.

Problems are uncommon with reputable chargers, but you should still avoid unknown ultra-cheap adapters and damaged cables. A poor-quality charger can have unstable voltage regulation or weak safety protections, which can cause overheating, erratic charging, or long-term battery wear.
Also keep expectations realistic: a fast charger can’t overcome limits set by your phone’s battery management. Some phones slow down on purpose as the battery fills, or when the device is warm.
Use a quality cable (USB-C to USB-C for USB-PD, or the cable type your phone expects) and keep connectors clean and snug. If you notice excess heat, charging stops/starts repeatedly, or the adapter becomes uncomfortably hot, switch to a different cable or charger and charge in a cool, ventilated spot.
Heat is the main factor that accelerates battery aging, and fast charging can create more heat under certain conditions. If your phone stays cool and manages charging properly, battery impact is typically minimal.
