How to Tell If You Have Heat Stroke: Warning Signs

How do I tell if I got heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. You may have it if you have been in hot conditions or exercising and develop confusion, fainting, a seizure, or trouble staying awake. Your body may feel very hot, and your skin may be flushed. You can have heat stroke whether your skin is dry or you are still sweating.

Call 911 immediately if you or someone near you has these symptoms. Do not wait for a temperature reading or for symptoms to improve. Heat stroke can damage the brain and other organs quickly.

What signs should I watch for?

Symptoms can appear during heat exposure or after strenuous activity. Warning signs include:

  • Confusion, unusual behavior, slurred speech, or difficulty responding
  • Fainting, loss of consciousness, or a seizure
  • Very hot skin, with or without sweating
  • A severe headache, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting
  • A rapid heartbeat or fast breathing

A body temperature of 104°F or higher is a major warning sign, but you do not need a thermometer to act. Confusion or collapse after heat exposure is enough reason to call 911.

What should I do while help is on the way?

Our team recommends starting these steps immediately after calling 911:

  1. Move to shade or an air-conditioned space and remove unnecessary clothing.
  2. Cool the person rapidly. If possible, immerse them in cold water while keeping their head above water. Otherwise, wet their skin with cool water, fan them, and apply cold, wet cloths or wrapped ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin.
  3. Stay with them and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not leave an unconscious person alone.

Do not give food or drinks to someone who is confused, unconscious, or unable to swallow safely. Fever-reducing medicines such as acetaminophen do not treat heat stroke. Even if the person seems better after cooling, they still need emergency medical care.

Can pets get heat stroke too?

Yes. Dogs can develop heat stroke quickly, including in a hot car or during exercise. Signs and first-aid steps differ from those for people, so read our guide to heat stroke in dogs and emergency care if your pet may be affected.

FAQ

How is heat exhaustion different from heat stroke?

Heat exhaustion can cause heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, and nausea, but heat stroke is especially concerning when confusion, fainting, or seizures occur. Move to a cool place and seek medical help if symptoms worsen or do not improve promptly.
