Habit stacking means attaching a new action to something you already do. Instead of relying on a separate reminder, you use an established routine as your cue: “After I do this, I’ll do that.” The new habit can be as small as taking one mindful breath or putting a glass of water by your desk.
We like to start with a routine that happens reliably, then add an action that fits naturally into the same moment. Here are a few combinations you can adapt to your day.
After you brush your teeth, take three slow breaths. Or, after you pour your morning coffee or tea, name one thing you want to focus on that day. Both options take little time and use an existing morning cue.
After you close your laptop for lunch, step away from your desk for a short walk. If you work at a computer, you can also relax your shoulders each time you refill your water glass. Keep the action comfortable and easy to repeat.
After you start the dishwasher, pause and notice the sounds around you for a few seconds. While you wait for water to boil, feel your feet on the floor and take a breath. These small pauses can turn ordinary transitions into moments of attention.
After you put your phone down for the evening, write one sentence about something that went well. You could also place a book beside your favorite chair after you tidy the living room, making it easier to choose a few minutes of reading.
Choose one specific cue and one small action. If the new step feels awkward or gets skipped, make it shorter or attach it to a more dependable routine. Our team recommends giving yourself room to adjust rather than trying to add several habits at once.

Habit stacking for exercise means connecting a movement habit to an existing routine, such as doing a few comfortable squats after brushing your teeth or taking a short walk after lunch. Start with a manageable amount and choose movements that feel appropriate for your body.
